Investing in Footwear: Your Guide to Building the Ultimate Shoe Collection

Fashion designers, models and well-dressed women everywhere agree: Shoes can make or break an outfit. The right pair of shoes can help an inexpensive ensemble shine; conversely, shabby footwear can ruin a perfectly styled wardrobe. In addition to completing any look, good quality shoes have the advantages of lasting longer and generally being kind to your feet.

A great shoe collection does not have to be excessively expensive. Some clever buys and some good quality pairs of the right kind of shoes should cover you for any situation. Additionally, your collection doesn’t have to be huge: shoes that keep their shape, won’t fall apart and can be resoled are a great investment. Remember to look after your shoes and give them a good polish now and again.

Footwear essentials

Must Have Shoes

Whether it’s a classic pump to wear with a work outfit, heeled ankle boots with skinny jeans or spiky heels to add the finishing touch to a stunning evening outfit, different shoes work with different outfits for different occasions. No shoe collection is complete without a great pair of sandals for the summer, some comfortable yet smart pumps for work, and a classic pair of boots that work well with most outfits.

Sneakers would seem a little out-of-place in the stylish shoe collection, but there is no doubt: sneakers are fashionable, especially in the fall and spring. When the weather gets colder, comfort kicks in, and sneakers bridge the gap between easy, comfortable footwear and bold fashion statement. The current season’s sneaker designs are super trendy, and sporty shoes are taking a walk out of the gym and onto the catwalk, where they’ve been spotted in combination with skinny jeans, frilly miniskirts and even sophisticated evening wear as this season’s mix of glamour and function.

Designer sneakers and fashionable trainers

The concealed wedge suede sneakers are a great example of a recent fashion trend that combines chic and sporty elements. A number of high-fashion names have recently brought out their own version of this new classic (from Isabel Marant to Nike), which is supportive and comfortable as well as fashionable, able to look just as good with a pair of skinny jeans as they do matched with a mini dress and black tights.

Other designer sneakers include Stella McCartney’s line for Adidas and Saint Laurent’s leather-trimmed high tops. The brand synonymous with sneakers, however, will always be Converse: the company that started it all have recently brought out a leather edition that’s built to last.

how to wear sneaks

Always invest in a good pair and you can save money – and space – because you will not be buying endless pairs of cheap, poor quality shoes, which not only fall apart quicker but can also put extra stress on your feet if they are not cushioned in the right areas. Cushioned comfort sneakers such as the Rycore Brand range are high on comfort, quality and style.

Finally, don’t be afraid to wear sneakers in different combinations, be it the sporty chic style or in complete contrast to a sophisticated outfit. For a preppy look, wear sneakers with black tights, short skirts and button-downs to go easy on your feet while still making a fashion statement.

Modeling For Venue Magazine

IMG_8387
Group shot of everyone who helped work on the shoot! I am on the far left.

I had set my alarm for 7am, but was alert and up by 5. Why? Because I was going to be shooting my very first magazine cover and editorial spread. I was anxious, excited, and so so ready.

My day began at 9am and ended around 5pm.  Time flew. After getting my hair and makeup done at a super fancy salon (they offered me cucumber water and had sinks with chairs attached that laid you flat on your back with the press of a button, making it comfortable for you and the stylist who’s washing your hair), we headed over to a local conservatory which is a nationally recognized showcase of more than 3,500 plant species from around the world… It was beautiful! This was the location for the cover shot.

This is the pose we perfected.

While the other model was getting her pictures taken, I received touchups to my hair and makeup and slipped into my first look, featuring a bright pink Escada jacket (roughly $1,500!).

It was my turn. I was given the advice to be “dynamic.” A thousand pose ideas came into my head as the photographer tested the lighting. I only got to do one. Everyone loved my very first pose, so we perfected it and I was done. Took five minutes tops. On to the next one…

One of stylists and I having a bonding moment.

We packed everything up, placed our orders for lunch and headed to the photographer’s studio for the editorial spread.

Behind the scenes of my second look

My first look was a fuchsia pantsuit and matching silk top. The poses needed to be strong and businesslike… this involved a lot of power walking across the set to create movement and give the illusion that I had an important place to be.

My final look (not pictured) was my absolute favorite! It featured this gorgeous DVF skirt in a stretchy, but durable material that everybody couldn’t help fawning over. I didn’t want to take it off.

The skirt was paired with an Alice + Olivia white biker jacket in tweed.   I had a lot of fun posing for that one (think lots of twirling!).

Overall the day was filled with lots of laughs, amazing designer clothes, and good people. I can’t wait to see how the pictures turn out. The magazine will be out April 9th.

Just Add These: Spring’s Best Accessory Trends 2014

Tip 1: Go Vintage

Image Via Macys.com/shop
Image Via Macys.com/shop

Whether you’re inspired by the gems in the Downton Abbey collection or if you’re bedazzled by Modcloth’s first vintage-inspired jewelry collection, vintage jewelry is in –or at least vintage-inspired jewelry is in. If you’ve ever been to an antique store and seen ornate settings for gems or peals, sometimes in chunky arrangements, those are the kinds of things that are getting attention this Spring. If you’re attending an evening event or something more formal, pick settings that are more ornate and gem-incrusted. If you’re looking for some great baubles for the office or maybe for a road trip, go with vintage-inspired looks that are more colorful and chunkier.

Tip 2: Go Smart

Flat loafers –sometimes with tassels- are in. These aren’t your professor’s loafers, however: both of these loafers (featured on Modcloth) show the loafer style as unique and different. Other loafers from Overstock.com and other sites may take a more conservative approach with leather loafers, or leather loafers with fringe or tassels. These are in for Spring, too, but be careful not to find a pair of loafers that age you. Stay youthful with bright colors and unique shoe designs.

Tip 3: Fringe

You can try fringe on the edge of scarves, fringe on the hems of blouses, or fringed bags. This blouse from H&M is one of the easiest ways to incorporate fringe into your wardrobe. If you want to go for a more subtle approach try a scarf. Keep your eye out for fringe this spring: it’s on everything!

Tip 4: Cross-body Bags

Image Via http://www.peoplestylewatch.com/people/stylewatch/gallery/0,,20480654_20904818,00.html

Last year, bags got a little too big. It’s okay if you noticed –everyone noticed, and that’s why this year’s Spring trend is small, crossbody bags (sometimes called micro-bags). The smaller, the better. The more zippers, the better. This crossbody bag from Arizona Jean Co. is both small and has plenty of zippers.

Tip 5: The Big Wave Sunglasses

Sometimes they look like ski goggles in time for this year’s Winter’s Olympics, and sometimes they look like giant sunglasses that are ideal for a day at the beach. Whether they’re wrap-around glasses or big, mirrored sunglasses, this year’s sunglasses trend is the opposite of the micro bags: the bigger the better. Some glasses companies like Carrera has put out a number of glasses models that have different large, stylish shapes.

Save Makeup, Save Money: Tips for Making Your Beauty Products Last

I am constantly talking to my girlfriends about what an investment beauty products are. If you’re a product junkie like me, your beauty budget can closely rival what you spend on new clothes. So whether it’s my wardrobe or makeup supply, I really want to make sure that I protect my investment.

Here are a few of my favorite ways to make my makeup last:

1. Build a Better Makeup Bag

At times, I look through my stash and find no fewer than a dozen variations of the exact same lip shade. None of these products get used consistently and they mostly end up expiring before I can even scratch the surface. I’ve learned that by better editing my purchase decisions, I can make sure that I have avariety of products that I use more frequently – and I’m more likely to use them to the very last drop.

HSN Makeup Brushes and Tools2. Clean your Brushes

Not only are makeup brushes expensive, but they also touch all of your makeup. By keeping them clean, not only are you extending their life, but also the life of your products. Keeping powders and blushes free and clear of oils and bacteria that tend to break them down will help them live a longer life.

3. Keep it Pretty

You will never find my hard earned makeup knocking around in a vanity drawer or at the bottom of my purse. Oh, the horror! I’m careful to keep my beauty treasures tucked inside of pouches when I’m on the go or on a tray sitting on my vanity at home. This way, there’s far less chance that they will crack or explode, wasting precious product.

4. Scrape the Bottom

I recently discovered these little spatulas that you can use to actually scrape the bottom of your makeup bottles to get to the very end of them. I’ve also been known to use them after cutting open tubes of concealer and lip glossto collect one final application. Brilliant!

5. Portion Control

It may go without saying, but using only what you need can really make your makeup last. I found that I was always left with unneeded foundation or extra moisturizer after applying, so I downsized my dose and I’m wasting less. Making other small changes like not spraying my fragrance into the air and walking through it has also helped!

These tricks have definitely helped me to stretch my beauty dollar, but I’m dying to know: how do you make your makeup last?

Valentine’s Day Outfits for Every Occasion

Love is in the air and Valentine’s Day is just a couple of weeks away. With all the special planning you have to do, you also have the stress of planning the perfect Valentine’s day outfit. Figuring out what to wear on V-day is often just as stressful as planning the day itself. I’m here to take a little bit of stress out of the day for you, by giving you the perfect outfits to wear for any date night scenario.  I’ve got the clothes covered, finding the restaurant and making reservations is all up to you!

1.
If you’re coupled up this V-day you will undoubtedly be heading out for a nice night out on the town, and I’m sure you’ll want to look the part. The key to planning the perfect V-day date night look is to make sure you look sexy, but also make sure you’re comfortable. That means nothing too tight and shoes that won’t hurt. I suggest the following look for those reasons.

2.      If you’re flying solo this year you can totally take a page out of Carrie Bradshaw’s book and invite a fellow single bestie out for dinner and drinks.  I personally think this is the best V-day date there is… just you, one of your best friends, good food, good music, and a sweet atmosphere.  You want to make sure you look the part for this date, as you don’t want to go super sexy or super causal. What you’ll want to pull off is a look my beloved Sorority coined  “Snappy Casual”- which just means you want to have the casual look without looking like you literally just rolled out of bed and put some jeans and riding boots on. Here ‘s my pick for date night with the bestie:

Vday Look

3.      So you’ve got multiple friends who are single on V-day, and you all want to get together and have a single V-day party  bash, but you’re at a loss for what to wear!?!?!  No worries for nights like these you can go the more casual comfortable look. You’ll look really cute and most importantly you’ll feel really comfortable and confident which is sexier than anything in the world you could ever wear!

Vday Look #2

4.      Last but not least- Sometimes you just want to spend V-day with yourself and there is nothing wrong with that. Just you, your TV (or a good book), and some comfy cute PJ’s. Here’s my pick for what to wear when lounging at home solo:

Dutch Braided Spiral

2 DIY Hairstyles Perfect for Valentine’s Day

image001

The following looks are from Sasha Coefield’s (creator of the popular beauty and fashion YouTube Channel AskSash88) new book where she shares her braiding secrets in DIY Braids: From Crowns to Fishtails, Easy, Step-by-Step Hair BraidingInstructions (Adams Media, December 2013).

Coefield features a ton of great hairstyles that are really easy to achieve (I learned how to create my first fishtail braid from the book!).  Here are two of my favorite styles that would be great for Valentine’s Day!

1. Dutch Braided Spiral

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Step 1: Divide the hair at the front of your head into three sections. Make sure to use medium-size sections when braiding since his hairstyle looks best with a bigger chunkier braid.

Step 2: Start Dutch Braiding by taking the section of hair on the right and putting it under the middle section. Then take the section on the left and cross it underneath the section in the middle. As you continue braiding towards the back of your head, make sure to add new sections of hair to both your left and right strands.

Step 3: After all hair has been incorporated into the Dutch braid and you have braid all the way down to the ends of your his, secure the braid with an elastic.

Step 4: Tug lightly on each part of the braid to make it appear wider and more flared out.

Step 5: Take your braid and form a spiral at the back of your head.

Step 6: Tuck the unbraided ends of your braid into the spiral.

Step 7: Secure the spiral with bobby pins.

2. Triple Fishtail

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Step 1: Divide all of your hair into three sections.

Step 2: Move the two outmost sections in front of your shoulders, so that you can focus on braiding the middle section. Divide this section in half.

Step 3: Begin fishtail braiding it by taking a very small piece of hair from the right section and brining it over to the left section. Then take a small piece of hair from the section on the left and bring it over to the right section. Continue fishtail braiding until you reach the ends of your hair, then secure the braid with an elastic.

Step 4: Once you have finished the middle Fishtail Braid, repeat the previous step with the left section of hair.

Step 5: Once you have finished the second Fishtail Braid, repeat Step 3 with the remaining section of hair.

Step 6: Take the braids you just created and treat them as you would if they were strands in a Regular Three Stranded Braid. Cross the right Fishtail Braid over the middle one and then the left Fishtail braid over the middle one.

Step 7: Continue this three-stranded braiding technique until you reach the ends of the braids.

Step 8: Secure the braids together with an elastic.

Modeling for On the Prowl Vintage Boutique

Recently, I had the opportunity to work with the owner of On the Prowl Vintage Boutique, an Etsy shop that sells handpicked, authentic vintage clothing. I spent the day getting my hair and makeup done and then shooting about fifty different outfits back-to-back. It was a lot of fun and the clothes are so amazing! Definitely take a look around the site to see for yourself. Below are some of my favorite shots from the photoshoot.
